Course Description

A review of the lives of Hugh and Richard Hartshorne of Hathern, Leicestershire, England, early investors in the Jerseys. Older brother Hugh, described as “an upholsterer,” was actually a well-connected businessman in the Worshipful Company of Skinners in London. He was also one of the original 24 East Jersey Proprietors, although he never visited New Jersey.

Richard showed up on Monmouth County in 1669 and purchased huge tracts of land, including today’s Sandy Hook and Hartshorne’s Woods. His Quaker family prospered for the next several centuries in Middletown and other parts of New Jersey.
