Course Description

Henry McNally, MA, Fordham, Irish historian, recipient of the Eoin McKirenan Award

The story of the Irish in America is at once generic and highly individual. It can be told with passenger manifests and census data and it can be told through the poignant, half-remembered tales recalled and repeated across generations. It is a story that includes heroism and shame, success and failure, joy and sorrow. We’ll consider new and emerging research into the Irish American story, look at early Irish arrivals in America while focusing more on immigration mid to late 20th Century and beyond. Explore the very real question of the existence of Irish-America today and in years to come. Format and discussion is deliberately designed to invite a sharing of experiences and opinions. 5 SESSIONS
