The collecting and maintaining of artistic and historically significant objects require special attention to their acquisition history, conservation and attribution. Without this information about a work of art, questions about its true ownership and country of origin can arise. Thousands of artworks changed hands after WWII and through colonization activities. These types of events can cause major upheavals to the world’s major art collections. Even innocent collecting can result in the disruption of established collections and exhibitions. The British Museum is an example of an encyclopedic collection from every era and civilization. Pieces like the Ancient Greek Parthenon Marbles and the Benin Bronzes have been considered their most appealing but contentious holdings. We will discuss the importance of their position within a museum’s provenance. Understanding the provenance of a collection can help to determine one’s cultural heritage.
