Course Description

Maureen Dunphy-Brady, MA, NYU Glucksman Ireland House, Irish historian

Standing barely five feet tall with snow- white hair and dressed all in black, the demure image of Mary Jones belied her fierce reputation as a labor activist. After emigrating from Ireland to America to escape the Great Famine of 1845, a series of personal tragedies changed the trajectory of her life. Jones turned heartbreak into activism, dedicating herself to the rights of workers and the repeal of child labor laws. Despite fierce opposition, she transformed herself into the ‘Mother’ of America’s 1900s labor movement.
