MORNING SESSION

The Settlement House Movement

Lyndell O’Hara, PhD

In the late 19th century, thousands of European immigrants came to America seeking freedom and opportunity. They usually lived in tenements where disease, overcrowding and poverty surrounded them. In response to their plight, a number of young women who were among the first to graduate from college, used their education and passion to create Settlement Houses in the midst of poor neighborhoods. Here they taught English and provided classes in job training, health care and American culture. These young women offered hope and opportunity to the newly arrived families, opening a door to success in this new world.
