The 1896 election is long forgotten but it has a lasting impact on political insiders more than 125 years later. It was the last election of the agriculture society and created the city versus rural divide. It was the first election of the industrial era and introduced big money into politics. The 1896 campaign may have also been the basis of the 1900 book by Frank Baum “The Wizard of Oz” and the 1939 movie of the same name.
