LISA LEVART – a photographer on a mission!

“Her images of women – Goddesses – will literally leave you breathless, they will empower you, lift you. Inspire you. Encourage you.”

—Amy Ferris, writer, author, playwright, and yes, a Goddess.

The Radical Act of Women Declaring: “I Am Here: See Me”

For over twenty-five years, Lisa has traveled near and far to create iconic portraits that uncover the spirit of independent girls, ferocious women, powerful warrior activists and epic elders and weaves together the personal and collective journeys of women’s lives.

Her work has been exhibited widely, from galleries in NYC, to museums, and as site-specific installations. It is represented in the permanent collection of the 9/11 Memorial Museum in NYC and was recognized by the Julia Margaret Cameron Award’s for Women Photographers, a Larry Salley Photography Award and a Brigit Award from the Association for the Study of Women and Mythology.

Lisa will share her journey from photographing glamorous weddings to photographing women as Goddesses – witnessing, evoking, and capturing the essence of everyday women, their goddess archetypes, stories and myths. The portraits are culturally diverse and grounded in a sense of place, the land. The work blends several mediums, including collage, film, multi-media, dance and photography.

Her gorgeous coffee table book Goddess on Earth: Portraits of the Divine Feminine eloquently reflects Lisa’s passion and gifts. Book will be available for purchase at the conference.

LAURA MCCULLOUGH - educator, poet, speaker

“This poet has the kind of binocular vision that can see the poetic and scientific aspects of the world simultaneously. . . . this shuffling together of lyrical/botanical and medical language is done so gracefully, it has the effect of bringing ‘the two cultures’ into a rare state of peaceful coexistence.”
Billy Collins, Poet Laureate of the United States (2001 to 2003)

Women & Other Hostages

Laura will read from two of her most recent collections of poetry, The Wild Night Dress and Women & Other Hostages, both of which explore themes of women’s relationships – mother-daughter, sisters, girlfriends – how women need each other, betray each other, forgive each other, laugh and cry with each other, and help each other find ways to go on even in the darkest hours. She will talk about the ways informal power has sometimes harmed women’s relationships and how personal agency and healing are important in strengthening the bonds between women.

Laura McCullough is a Professor of English at Brookdale and holds an MFA from Goddard College. A three-time NJ State Arts Council Fellow in both poetry and prose, she has published 8 books of poetry, including The Wild Night Dress selected by Billy Collins for the Miller Williams Poetry Series for University of Arkansas Press. Her poems and prose have appeared widely in magazines and journals such as The American Poetry Review, Prairie Schooner, Guld Coast, and many more, and she has been a Dodge Poetry Festival performer.

She has been awarded three NJ State Arts Council Fellowships, two in poetry & one in prose. In addition to her creative work, Laura is a scholar in her field & has edited two anthologies, A Sense of Regard: Essays on poetry & Race (Georgia University Press) and The Room and the World: essays on Stephen Dunn (University of Syracuse Press).
