This course examines Ireland’s transition from a British colony to an independent, democratic republic, starting with the period after the 1916 Easter Rising. Topics to be discussed are: the creation of the Irish Free State, the rise of Éamon de Valera; the influence of the Church; the evolving role of women; and, key events that shaped the emerging republic. The aim of this course is to provide students with knowledge of the major themes, social forces, and events that set the foundation for modern Ireland. 5 SESSIONS
