Course Description

Maureen Dunphy Brady, MA, NYU Glucksman Ireland House, Irish historian

Today’s Irish writers are contributing to “an unexpected golden age of Irish prose writing.” Classes take place once a month for three months. Students will read a novel by a different author each month and participate in group discussions. (Includes light refreshments)

March 12

Solace by Belinda McKeon A story of a father and son thrown together by tragedy; one clinging to the old ways and one plunging into the new. This novel is about the conflicting values of the old and young generations and the stubborn, heartbreaking habits that mute the language of love.

April 16

The Coast Road by Alan Murrin Set in 1994, The Coast Road details the experiences of two women—Izzy Keaveney, a housewife, and Colette Crowley, a poet. It is a tale about limits placed on women’s lives in Ireland only a generation ago, and the consequences they suffered trying to gain independence.

May 14

Wild Houses by Colin Barrett Set against the trademark depictions of small-town life in County Mayo, Ireland, it is a thrillingly- told story of a collective of mournful souls striving to find themselves. At the center are two outsiders caught in the crosshairs of a revenge kidnapping gone awry.
